UK tax year day counter
Add your stays in the UK. See how many days count in each tax year under the midnight rule, and how far you are from the next day band of the Statutory Residence Test.
How the count works
The Statutory Residence Test counts a day as a UK day if you are in the UK at the end of it, at midnight. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. This counter applies that rule to each stay you enter and splits the total by tax year.
It tells you the days you've used. How many your ties to the UK allow is a separate question, which Dubai Transition Consultants' how many days can I spend in the UK tool works through. Dubai Transition Consultants is run by the same company as RezTally.
It does not apply the exceptions, explained with examples in what counts as a UK day and in HMRC's guidance, RDR3:
- Transit days: arriving as a passenger and leaving the next day without doing anything unrelated to your journey.
- Exceptional circumstances: up to 60 days a year when you are kept in the UK by something beyond your control, such as illness or a travel ban.
- The deeming rule: if you have three or more UK ties and were resident in one of the last three years, days on which you were in the UK but left before midnight can count once there are more than 30 of them.
The day bands (16, 46, 91, 121 and 183 days) are where the test's outcome can change, depending on your ties to the UK and whether you were resident in earlier years. Days are only part of the test: read the guide to the Statutory Residence Test.
